Pope names monsignor new bishop of Greensburg

GREENSBURG, Pa (AP) — More than 128,000 Roman Catholics in southwestern Pennsylvania are getting a new leader. Pope Francis on Friday appointed the Rev. Monsignor Larry Kulick as the sixth bishop of the Greensburg Diocese. The diocese says the 54-year-old has served as administrator since his predecessor, Bishop Edward Malesic, became the bishop of Cleveland in September. In a statement, Kulick says he's honored to serve in a diocese where he was born, raised, educated and ordained.

Presepio displayed at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Altoona

ALTOONA, Pa. (WJAC) — Our Lady of Mount Carmel parish, in Altoona, has once again built its annual Presepio scene to honor the birth of Jesus. The display differs from the traditional nativity scene in that it features a wide array of items that comprise it. The holiday display is based on the Presepios in the churches of southern Italy. Presepios are unique because they are technically always ‘growing.’ Father Frank Scornaienchi narrates the meaning behind the traditional Italian display, and how people from around the world have contributed to it.

Altoona Driver License Center to reopen following renovations

ALTOONA, Pa. (WJAC) — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced Wednesday that the Driver License Center at 1738A 9th Ave. in Altoona will reopen. PennDOT says the center will reopen driver licensing and photo services Thursday at 8:30 a.m. after closing for nearly a month for renovations. PennDOT says the center’s hours will be expanded when it reopens. Officials say the center will now be open Tuesdays through Saturdays 8:30 a.

Fire destroys multiple townhomes in western PA neighborhood

Cecil Township, PA — Investigators say at least four townhomes were destroyed following a fire in western Pennsylvania. Crews were called to the scene at Georgetown Estates, in Cecil Township, shortly before 4 p.m. Wednesday. According to officials, the fire started in the garage of an end unit. Four townhomes were destroyed, while two others were damaged. People were home at the time of the fire, but everyone got out and there were no injuries reported.

Former Centre County DA expresses remorse in bid to get her law license reinstated

CENTRE COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — Former Centre County District Attorney Stacy Parks Miller expressed remorse Monday during a state Supreme Court hearing in a bid to get her law license reinstated. Parks Miller’s law license was suspended by the Supreme Court in March of 2019 for a year and one day. As Centre County's district attorney, she was found guilty of having exparte-illegal communications through text messages with two county judges without the knowledge of defense attorneys.
