Cambria Co. woman accused of committing healthcare fraud

Cambria Co., PA (WJAC) — Federal authorities announced that a Cambria County woman has been charged with conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud. According to court documents, Florentina Mayko was charged after she allegedly defrauded Medicare and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, between 2017 and 2019. Mayko allegedly submitted medically unnecessary urine drug tests for chronic opioid patients at medical clinics where she served as the chief executive officer.

Concerned residents seek changes after latest transgression in Westmont Hilltop S.D.

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) — Outraged parents and residents of the Westmont Hilltop School District again demanded answers from their school board following a criminal investigation that led to rape charges against a long-time music teacher that also revealed other cases of inappropriate touching dating back several years that investigators say the school district knew about. "(The school board) either don’t care about the kids, they’re incompetent, or they’re crooked," said John Mize, of Concerned Citizens of Westmont Hilltop School District.

Nearly 2 dozen charged in Cambria County drug roundup

JOHNSTOWN, Pa (WJAC) — Cambria County District Attorney Greg Neugebauer says 22 people are facing drug charges after a sweep across the Johnstown area. Over the past week, authorities say the suspects were taken into custody on felony arrest warrants – most of the charges involving the delivery of drugs such as crack cocaine, methamphetamine and heroin. According to the district attorney’s office, the following individuals have been apprehended and arraigned at the Cambria County Prison:

Pair of PA bald eagles welcome their first hatchling of 2021

HANOVER, Pa. (WJAC) — A pair of Pennsylvania bald eagles welcomed their first hatchling of 2021 into the world this week, according to Raptor Ecology Specialist Zoey Greenburg. The eaglet, the first hatchling in the Hanover nest this year, arrived Saturday around 6 a.m. The pair of eggs were laid in the first week of February. “This objectively adorable fluff ball is officially the third member of this year’s Hanover family, and its sibling is likely preparing to emerge as we speak,” Greenburg wrote in the Hanover Eagle Blog.

Coroner IDs victim of fatal Route 22 crash; victim's dog also injured & was euthanized

2nd UPDATE|Cambria Co., PA (WJAC) — Authorities in Cambria County are providing new details on Thursday's fatal crash that shut down Route 22 westbound, near Ebensburg, for several hours. Cambria County coroner Jeff Lees identified the victim as 77-year-old Richard Dow, of Ebensburg. Investigators say Dow suffered massive blunt force trauma to his head and chest when his SUV was struck by a tri-axle truck near the Unimart intersection. Authorities also noted that the victim's family dog, a Maltese Poodle, was inside the vehicle at the time of the crash and suffered injuries that resulted in it having to be euthanized.
