Sheetz officials say that the employee was at the store Thursday morning and as a result, the store has been closed and will be deep-cleaned. Plans for SCI Cresson property fall through

CRESSON -- Plans to redevelop the former State Correctional Institution's property into a power plant fell through this week after the company that agreed to build it backed out due to the area's economy. The Cambria County Redevelopment Authority had an agreement with Boston-based Energy Management Inc. to build a gas-fired electric generation plant where SCI Cresson once operated. According to Redevelopment Authority Chairman Sam Piccioni, county leaders received a letter from Energy Management with the news Thursday night.

PSP IDs couple killed in 3-vehicle crash on Route 220 in Centre Co.

SEATTLE (KOMO) — Lunar New Year could become a Washington state legal holiday if a new bill gets passed. According to Substitute House Bill 1516, the day of Lunar New Year is on the "date corresponding with the second new moon following the winter solstice, or the third new moon following the winter solstice should an intercalary month intervene." According to the House Bill Anaylsis, the Saturday before the beginning of the Lunar New Year would become the designated day for the state legal holiday.

2 PSU students have coronavirus after studying abroad; neither was on campus

CHICAGO (AP) Chicago police said Tuesday that they are investigating an allegation of sexual assault against Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Jung Ho Kang. In a statement, police said a 23-year-old female reported being assaulted by Kang inside a hotel. Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the Chicago woman met Kang through a dating app. Kang invited the woman to his hotel room on June 17, after the Pirates played the Cubs. Somerset County recycling program suspended, officials work to find new model

SOMERSET COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — People in Somerset County will have to find an alternative way to recycle. This comes after the county commissioners made the choice to suspend their recycling program, effective March 13. The Somerset County recycling program began in the 1990s. The current model which consists of nine drop off sites throughout the county began in 2008. The recyclables would then be picked up and sorted through by inmates from the county jail.

Moshannon Valley Correctional Center to Close Next Wednesday

PHILIPSBURG/CLEARFIELD COUNTY, Pa — The Moshannon Valley Correctional Center will be closing its doors on March 31st. Officers justified in fatally shooting man wielding machete at Ligonier Twp. home

Westmoreland County, PA — Authorities in Westmoreland County are providing an update on the investigation into the fatal officer-involved shooting from earlier this month. On Friday, Westmoreland County District Attorney Nicole Ziccarelli ruled that the officers involved in the July 2nd shooting were justified in killing 59-year-old Robbie Saunders. Global science program comes to Hollidaysburg

HOLLIDAYSBURG -- Science cafes have popped up all over the world, and the first one in Central Pennsylvania recently opened at Allegheny Creamery and Crepes. Heather Saleme owns Alleghney Creamery and Crepes, which is located downtown. Centre Co., PA (WJAC) — A Centre County man will spend at least two and half years behind bars after pleading guilty on child pornography charges. It was almost a year ago, late last August, when police and agents from the state attorney general’s office served a search warrant on the Spring Mills area home of Lucas Garber. The police raid resulted in the 27-year-old Garber being charged with 33 felony counts of possessing child pornography.

Walgreens joins big-box price cuts with over 1,300 items discounted this summer

Walgreens announced Wednesday it would be slashing prices on over 1,300 products as part of their "Summer of Savings." The company joined several big-box retailers taking the same initiative to try and boost sales amid increasing inflation. C3 Sports Complex planning to host basketball tournament next weekend

CENTRE CO, Pa (WJAC) — They came under fire for hosting more than a thousand athletes and many more family members and spectators a few months ago. Now a Centre County sporting facility that said they would suspend hosting tournaments, is preparing to host one next weekend. A few months ago, the C3 Sports Complex hosted a wrestling tournament which brought in more than 1,000 wrestlers and lots of spectators and resulted in several COVID-19 related citations for the property owners.

Cambria County Assistance Office moving out of downtown Johnstown

The Pennsylvania Department of Human Services said next spring the Cambria County Assistance Office will move into the Hiram G Andrews Center in Upper Yoder Township. The Assistance Office is currently located on Main Street in downtown Johnstown. The DHS said moving to the state-owned facility will lower operation costs. They said there is a bus stop outside the Hiram G Andrews Center, and there will be free parking available, allowing for a variety of ways to transport to the Assistance Office.

Owner of Conemaugh Health System, LifePoint Health, received $1.5B in COVID relief

LifePoint Health received $1.5 billion in federal relief money to offset the cost of the pandemic, according to business magazine Bloomberg. Conemaugh Health System is owned by LifePoint. According to Bloomberg, the for-profit system is owned by Apollo Global Management which is led by billionaire Leon Black. The report says taxpayer money covered the cost of treating COVID-19 patients. LifePoint and Apollo say they're entitled to the money because it lost revenue from a lack of elective procedures.

Pennsylvania to ban cell phone use while driving in effort to reduce distracted driving

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Pennsylvania will join the majority of states that ban motorists from handling a cell phone for almost any purpose while driving, as backers of the legislation hope to reduce distracted driving accidents and deaths after nearly two decades of pressing the measure. Gov. Josh Shapiro's office said Thursday that the Democrat will sign the bill, 18 years after he first introduced a similar bill when he served in the state House of Representatives.

Toxic gas release likely from Ohio derailment

EAST PALESTINE, Ohio (AP) — Authorities were threatening to arrest anyone who doesn’t leave an evacuation zone near the smoldering wreckage of an Ohio train derailment near the Pennsylvania state line and warned Monday there was a high probability of a toxic gas release. While crews were working to prevent a major explosion, residents were packing overnight bags, loading their pets into cars and searching for hotel rooms. Police in the village of East Palestine moved out of their communication center as the threat of an explosion increased.

Altoona man featured in PA art exhibit honoring those who died from overdoses

(WJAC) — There's a new art exhibit at Millersville University opening Friday evening displaying sketches of people who died from drug overdoses. The exhibit features the sketch of Shawn Sinisi from Altoona who lost his life in 2018 to addiction. "It's a beautiful project. I just feel like it really shows the person that was full of life and happiness," said Shawn's mom, Marianne. These sketches show the person as a happy version of themselves before the addiction took over.

Ebensburg's 32nd annual potato fest remains unaffected by reported potato shortage

This, even as reports show a shortage on potatoes. 6 News spoke with an official behind the potato fest and a local potato farmer about this - they say were not seeing much of a potato shortage locally and so the Potato Fest in Ebensburg will go on like it has in years past. “This weekend, on Saturday in Ebensburg is our annual Potato Fest,” said Danea Koss, a Community Development Director.

(TND) — Harvard University’s governing body on Wednesday denied a faculty push to award degrees to 13 seniors undergoing disciplinary action for their involvement in a pro-Palestine demonstration on campus. Harvard was one of several schools across the country to host a Gaza solidarity encampment in protest of the conflict in the Middle East. Video of the encampment shared via Instagram shows students rushing a campus lawn and hurriedly setting up tents as onlookers cheer.

The team also took home the top prize in the whole hog division, where the entire pig is cooked at once. Morrisdale woman killed husband, claimed suicide to access $1M will

CLEARFIELD COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — A Morrisdale woman has been charged with shooting her husband and then claiming he killed himself so she could get access to a million-dollar will, investigators say. Clearfield County District Attorney William Shaw tells 6 News that 46-year-old Kimberly Williams, of Morrisdale, faces multiple charges in the slaying of her husband, Ronald Williams Jr. The case was originally reported as a suicide, but ballistics evidence led investigators to rule it a homicide.

Penn State frat charged over 19-year-old woman's alcohol use

STATE COLLEGE -- A fraternity at Penn State is facing charges over a woman's alcohol consumption at the frat house. The Centre Daily Times reports the 19-year-old woman was taken to a hospital Nov. 11 for alcohol overdose treatment after police found her outside Alpha Sigma Phi. They say she was being held up by two friends as she went in and out of consciousness. In a later interview, she told police she went to the frat party on her birthday and was served about five vodka drinks.

Storm causes delay in Windber church fire

Windber's Church of the Nazarene was struck by lightning Sunday morning which caused a portion of the building to catch on fire. Crews arrived on scene at 4:15 am and left around 8:00 am with only one minor injury reported which was sustained by a member of the fire crew. The building was empty at the time of the accident but officials say that because of last night's storm it took neighbors a while to notice that something wasn't right.

Police confident of eventual arrest in mall shooting

MONROEVILLE, Pa. (AP) — Authorities are expressing confidence about an eventual arrest in a shooting outside a western Pennsylvania mall that prompted an evacuation Monroeville police say two groups of four to five males began fighting at about 8 p.m. Friday, and the brawl spilled outside, where one person pulled a gun and fired about 10 shots. No injuries were reported. The mall, about 17 miles (27.36 kilometers) east of Pittsburgh was placed on lockdown and later evacuated.

MEXICO — Mexico's often violent battles between street performers reached a new level this week when a group of a half-dozen burly street musicians - guitar-toting mariachis --- at first seemed to be prevailing in a brawl with another street performer, a flame-swallower. Former Alabama dentist receives 180-year sentence for sexual abuse of patients and staff

ETOWAH COUNTY, Ala. (WBMA) — A former Alabama dentist was sentenced to serve 180 years in prison for rape, sodomy and sexual abuse inflicted on former employees and patients from his dental office. Deputy District Attorney of Etowah County Carol Griffith said 44-year-old Joseph Clarence Cox was found guilty by a jury in January. Griffith said Cox was arrested in April 2021, following an extensive investigation by Gadsden Police Department. At trial, evidence showed that there was a large employee turnover within his office between June 2020 and April 2021, due to Cox’s inappropriate sexual contact with employees.

Man's drowning at Carrolltown pond ruled accidental; alcohol was a factor

Cambria Co., PA (WJAC) — The death of a man found in a Carrolltown pond last month has officially been ruled accidental. The Cambria County coroner's office says 42-year-old Eric Bender died from drowning. Authorities say alcohol intoxication was also identified as a contributing factor. Bender was found in the early morning hours of June 19th in a pond about 10 feet deep off Dindios Street. Authorities say he reportedly lived nearby.

Coroner ID's Cambria County man who drowned in Carrolltown pond

UPDATE | CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa. (WJAC) — Authorities say a Cambria County man drowned early Monday morning in a pond in Carrolltown. Crews were called just before 4 a.m. The Cambria County Coroner's office says a dive team recovered 42-year-old Eric Bender just after 5 a.m. Officials say that pond is about 10 feet deep. They say Bender lived about 100 yards away from the water. Lees says Bender was taken to Conemaugh Miners Medical Center Emergency Room and couldn’t be resuscitated.

DuBois hardware store still operating after fire destroyed building

DUBOIS, Pa. - Officials ruled a fire at a Clearfield County apartment and hardware store in May as arson. Crews responded to the building on West Long Avenue in DuBois on May 19, which housed Mike's Lock and Hardware Store on the first floor and apartments upstairs. Several people were left homeless. "I got a call from my sister that said, 'Mike your building is on fire,'" said Mike Rudzinski, owner of the hardware store.

Man sets Supreme Court car ablaze, gets 10-year sentence after self-inflicted burns

WASHINGTON (7News) — In 2020, a Maryland man set a U.S. Supreme Court Police car on fire and poured gasoline on several others. Years later, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison. On July 15, 2020, 26-year-old Michael Tarner went onto the United States Supreme Court's property, pulled out a gas can from his car, then poured gasoline onto three unmarked Supreme Court Police cars, according to government evidence.

PSU Fraternity Suspended through 2021 over COVID-19 violations

Johnstown area teen charged as an adult following shooting in Moxham

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (WJAC) — Police say a Johnstown-area teenager is being charged as an adult following a shooting in the Moxham section of the city. Authorities say on Thursday evening, just before 7 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 700 block of Grove Ave. for a reported shooting. Police say one victim was transported to Conemaugh Hospital for treatment of two gunshot wounds to the calf and knee areas. According to the affidavit, police say the shooter, identified as 16-year-old Tyjir Graham, was still on scene and surrendered to officers without incident.

Police say troopers were dispatched Monday morning, just before 9 a.m., to the area of Lincoln Way East and South Second Street, in McConnellsburg Borough, where they reportedly found an unresponsive infant. Troopers say the child was later pronounced dead at the scene by the Fulton County coroner's office.

1 fraternity brother dead, 1 arrested after fight

INDIANA -- Authorities say one of two fraternity brothers involved in a fight near their central Pennsylvania university campus later died, and the other member was arrested on an assault charge. Indiana Borough police allege that 20-year-old Caleb Zweig was choked during the altercation just after 11 p.m. Friday near the Indiana University of Pennsylvania campus. Police said the Rockville, Maryland man later died at Indiana Regional Medical Center. The coroner is awaiting results of toxicology and other tests.

MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) — A rare great white shark sighting about 30 miles off the Alabama coast was caught on camera. Researchers at the University of South Alabama (USA) captured video of a juvenile female great white shark hanging out south of the Sand Island lighthouse. According to a news release from USA, this is the first known sighting in that area recorded by scientists, and this juvenile shark has never been recorded before.

PennDOT resumes driver's tests at license centers

The eaglet, the first hatchling in the Hanover nest this year, arrived Saturday around 6 a.m. The pair of eggs were laid in the first week of February. “This objectively adorable fluff ball is officially the third member of this year’s Hanover family, and its sibling is likely preparing to emerge as we speak,” Greenburg wrote in the Hanover Eagle Blog.

Coroner IDs victim of fatal Route 22 crash; victim's dog also injured & was euthanized

2nd UPDATE|Cambria Co., PA (WJAC) — Authorities in Cambria County are providing new details on Thursday's fatal crash that shut down Route 22 westbound, near Ebensburg, for several hours. Cambria County coroner Jeff Lees identified the victim as 77-year-old Richard Dow, of Ebensburg. Investigators say Dow suffered massive blunt force trauma to his head and chest when his SUV was struck by a tri-axle truck near the Unimart intersection. Authorities also noted that the victim's family dog, a Maltese Poodle, was inside the vehicle at the time of the crash and suffered injuries that resulted in it having to be euthanized.

Former pharmacist charged with stealing, diluting meds from half a dozen pharmacies

Authorities say they were notified by the grocery chain after management observed Edwards on surveillance video stealing groceries from its E Chestnut Avenue location.

Lawmakers to introduce legislation observing K9 Veterans Day in Pennsylvania

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WJAC) — Two Pennsylvania lawmakers say they are planning to introduce legislation that would designate March 13 as "K9 Veterans Day" in the Commonwealth. Currently, several other states, including New Jersey, Florida, Michigan, and West Virginia, recognize the "holiday." If passed, the legislation would require the Governor to issue an annual proclamation calling upon Pennsylvanians to observe the day with various educational activities and programs. Greater Johnstown SD hiring four police officers

According to officials at Greater Johnstown there has been just one resource officer in the district with four buildings. They said Greater Johnstown Elementary last having a resource officer in October 2022 and the high school has not had one since November. These four officers will be employees of the school district according to officials rather than before having resource officers with the Johnstown Police Department at the schools. The officers will be paid for out of the school’s general fund and officials said it will be able to be sustained.

Man charged with breaking into Altoona Curve Baseball stadium, caught hiding in golf club toilet

A 37-year-old man has been charged with breaking into Peoples Natural Gas Field Thursday afternoon. At about 11:50 a.m. Thursday Logan Township police responded to the stadium for a report of a burglary. The glass of an office door had been broken to gain entrance, according to township police. Photos and video were obtained that showed Brandon Lee Allen as the person who broke into the office and stole multiple items, according to police.

Man returns Steelers' bike, says he bought it for $200

PITTSBURGH -- Police say a man has returned JuJu Smith-Schuster's bike, telling investigators he bought it from someone for $200 on the street. Mount Oliver police Chief Matt Juzwick said the man called from a bar about 11 p.m. Tuesday after realizing from TV news the bike was reported stolen by the Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver. Smith-Schuster was expected to pick it up Wednesday. Mount Oliver is a tiny borough bordering Pittsburgh.

Fire destroys family sawmill in Somerset County

ROCKWOOD, Pa. (WJAC) — "They just pretty much follow us," said LJ Bowers, while standing among the remains of his family's sawmill. On Saturday around 11 p.m., Bowers was driving around with friends when he saw smoke from the road. He said he immediately knew that the sawmill was on fire. Teen lifeguard dies after accident off NJ shore beach

The Cape May city government said Saturday that 16-year-old Norman Inferrera III died after an accident Thursday off the Reading Avenue beach. Food insecurity soars in local counties, hitting record levels, report finds

Feeding America’s latest Map the Meal Gap report shows local data for food insecurity. This year’s report says that insecurity levels in Cambria and Somerset counties are worse than ever. Judge sentences former Woodward gymnastics coach to max of 5 years in prison

Centre Co., PA (WJAC) — Authorities with the Centre County District Attorney's office confirmed to 6 News that a former Woodward sports camp coach, who was convicted of inappropriately touching a teenage gymnast, has been sentenced. On Tuesday, a judge sentenced Nathaniel Singer to serve 2-and-a-half to five years in state prison, followed by three years of probation. Officials say he must also register as a lifetime sex offender. Earlier this year, Singer was convicted on multiple charges after being accused of groping a 13-year-old girl, in 2019, while serving as a gymnastics coach for the camp.

Crews find body of 10-year-old boy who fell into river

BEAVER COUNTY, Pa. (AP) — Authorities have found the body of a 10-year-old boy who fell into a river in western Pennsylvania earlier this week while trying to retrieve a lost shoe. The boy was found Wednesday in the Ohio River after state police from Philadelphia used special equipment to help complete the search. The child's name and further information about him has not been released. Authorities have said the boy fell into the river Monday just north of the Ambridge-Aliquippa Bridge in Beaver County.

College football player Brian Battie on ventilator after shooting in Florida, coach says

Auburn running back Brian Battie has been hospitalized following a weekend shooting in Florida, where his brother was killed and three others were hurt. The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office said they responded to a strip mall at about 3:30 a.m. Saturday, finding a large crowd and multiple people who were shot in the parking lot. The office said in a statement that Tommie L. Battie IV was pronounced dead at the scene.

Upper Darby Township, PA — Authorities say two children were killed in an early morning house fire in Upper Darby, Delaware County. According to Fire Chief Derrick Sawyer, the fire began at about 4:03 a.m., at a residence along the 300 block of Margate Road. WARMINSTER -- A Pennsylvania man is recovering after he was stung by a scorpion that somehow got into his backpack while he was on vacation in the Caribbean. Fire destroys multiple townhomes in western PA neighborhood

Policy change allows Pennsylvania special education students to stay in school until 22

Train carrying hazardous materials derails in Pennsylvania prompting evacuations

WASHINGTON (TND) — Homes were evacuated in Pennsylvania Monday morning after a train carrying hazardous materials derailed. A 40-car CSX freight train derailed in Montgomery County just before 5 a.m. causing emergency crews to respond to Whitemarsh Township, according to CBS News. CSX said at least 16 cars went off the tracks but officials alter confirmed 15 cars derailed. Precautionary evacuations have occurred at the residents and businesses closest to the scene.

Railroad offers rides aboard historic steam locomotive

HOLLIDAYSBURG, Pa. (WJAC) -- The Everett Railroad is giving passengers a chance to punch their ticket to the past, offering rides on one of their steam locomotives this weekend. On Saturday, passengers will climb aboard a restored 1920s steam engine at the Hollidaysburg Depot Station and embark on a three-hour journey. Tomahawks have new owners, to stay in Johnstown

In a statement sent to 6 News, they say the team was purchased by a group of local investors known as Tomahawks Hockey Partners, LLC. It said the new owners are committed to keeping the team in Johnstown and playing at 1st Summit Arena at the Cambria County War Memorial. Richland Cinemas shows off new 3-D technology

Cambria Co., PA (WJAC) — In Cambria County Wednesday, Richland Cinemas tested out new 3-D technology. Owner Ed Troll says new digital projectors will be able to show films at a higher frame rate, which will catch up with the cameras being used to shoot the films. Frames will go from 24 to 48 frames a second, which brings in a greater depth of field for the viewers eyes. He says the higher the frame rate, the more real the image appears.

Sheetz lowers price of Unleaded 88 for remainder of the month

Blair Co., PA (WJAC) — Sheetz announced Thursday that it is lowering the price of its Unleaded 88 gas to $2.99 per gallon for the remainder of the month of August. Officials say Unleaded 88 has been approved by the EPA to be used in all cars, trucks and SUVs that were made in 2001 or newer. Experts say that Unleaded 88 "burns cleaner" and makes it more environmentally friendly.
